dream closet: hot to trot

Sketches of what I wish I had been wearing during July's heatwave pretty much still apply during this weekends' rise in temperature.  All I can bear on my body at the moment is super free and easy cotton pieces (bright prints a bonus)... so naturally, I am filling my dream closet with an arsenal of wares like the scribbles above.  Inspired by vintage I've known/loved(some even owned), a palette of favorite felt tip markers, and this fantastic dress that Marion Cotillard wore in Midnight in Paris...

paper play

Having fun messing around with a few leftover scraps from a recent portrait I made...
The love I have for cut paper shapes is no mystery.  I spent much of my childhood perched atop a stool next to my dad in our home studio while he was cutting and pasting up things like this...
I was his partner in paper cutting crime...I scribbled up six year old ideas for page layouts and, due to his colorblindness, it was often my job to pick out the giant pieces of bright paper that lived in the files under the desk, and assign them to their various parts.  This sometimes made for pirates with purple bandannas and turquoise ballerinas, but it all worked out well, just the same since (at the time) he was illustrating for an audience around my age.  I think it was some of the best(and most fun) training in my artistic career.

stormy weather

snapped with my Canon point and shoot... edited with good ol Photoshop
I have to say, I've really been enjoying the gray weather we've been having lately... a true testament to my New England roots, I suppose.  I would imagine that working from home adds to my enjoyment, since rather than going out into the mucky weather, Im admiring it from my cozy, third floor apartment/studio.  With the windows and screen door wide open, Im soaking up oceany gusts of wind while I process invoices, work on business card designs (for a composer & an accessory designer), make mock ups for a local flag maker(that is currently working with Harvard University...lots of crimson on my screen!), and every once and a while, pop outside to capture the rain at it's most ridiculous/glorious!
I don't care what anyone says, I LOVE New England weather.
(just remind me I said that in the winter)

sample sale score

This past week, I happened to find myself working in house at TJX during their yearly sample sale.  With the help of my good pal (& kids bedding designer extraordinaire), Anni, I was able to grab both the first sample of a quilt I designed for Marshalls/TJMaxx home AND this fabulous brimmed hat (which reminds me of several that I've scribbled).  I am feeling like a pretty lucky gal right now.

I am enjoying this perfect, rainy Sunday lounging on my new quilt and listening to blues records with my guy while he bakes cookies.  Man, life is good.

artist crush: julia denos

left: the cover of Julia's new book, I had a Favorite Dress
& right: a portrait I collaged/drew of the lovely illustrator lady herself
( I was liberal with my crayon, as Julia is the only artist I know who uses it more than I do, and gosh she does it well!)
When I first stumbled across Julia Denos' blog, the Cinnamon Rabbit, I was immediately taken with her playful illustrations, and several years later, I am still excited to see what she posts every day.  The color, texture and style she brings to each one of her characters always brings a smile to my face.  Not only is Julia a superbly talented illustrator of several fantastic children's books (instant classics, in my opinion!), she is sweet as pie with an imagination only a truly youthful spirit may possess.  I have had the pleasure of getting to know both the artist and her work over the past few years, and as of last week became the proud winner of her print+book giveaway for her newly illustrated work, I Had A Favorite Dress, by Bonnie Ashburn.

I cant tell you how thrilled I am to have a signed Denos print in my studio/dressing room to inspire carefree creation in both my work and fashion choices.  Thank you, Julia!

daily doodles: flurries of floral

flipping through my daily planner (attempting to plan my days) I stumbled across this flurry of flora, congregating in the pages of an unused October... seemed more apropos to today's warm weather than the season it is drawn in!
